The 2022 Corolla Cross: A Compact Crossover With Huge Style

The Toyota Corolla is the most successful vehicle nameplate of all time, spanning over five decades of production and posting sales of over 50 million units worldwide. And while the range might be most commonly associated with sedans and hatchbacks, there's now a new string to the Corolla bow.

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross takes all the dependability and quality of previous Corolla models and applies them to a taller, more spacious SUV format, adding a new dimension of versatility to the expanded lineup.

Sleek Modern Design with Spacious Interior

The Corolla range is known for its streamlined exterior designs, whether in sedan or hatch models, and the Cross takes the same high style levels to the compact SUV format. While the overall profile is taller and chunkier than its sedan and hatchback cousins, the Cross shows none of the bulkiness or boxy lines of some other SUVs, with the front end in particular combining a pugnacious grille with swept-back headlights to stylish effect. Flared fender arches, an integrated rear spoiler, and optional 18" alloy wheels add a genuine sports feel to deliver a sense of excitement to your journeys.

But the benefits of the SUV format really come to light once you enter the spacious cabin. Although it borrows its well-designed layout and high-end materials from the Corolla sedan, the increased dimensions mean that there's comfortable space for five adult passengers, while the 60/40 folding seats offer up to 440L of cargo capacity for even greater versatility.

And to add to the upscale feel, optional features including faux-leather heated seats, a rear-seat flip-down armrest, and dual zone automatic climate control combine to give a luxurious experience in your daily drive.

Powertrain and Performance

While the Cross may feature an all-new body design, the underlying engineering is built on the successful foundations of existing Corolla models. All trim levels are powered by a 2.0L inline-4 engine making a healthy 169 horsepower and 151lb-ft of torque, an ample output for any compact crossover. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is supplied as standard for a smooth drive and enhanced fuel economy, while a sequential shift mode is also included for greater control over gear changes if desired.

But the biggest news for Canadian drivers is that while the Cross is front-wheel drive as standard, there's now also the option of all-wheel drive, correcting a major omission of FWD-only stablemates including the Toyota C-HR. This combination of AWD and generous engine power makes the Corolla Cross a much more versatile and assured performer, even in the toughest of year-round conditions.

Advanced Infotainment Technology

Starting at the entry-level L trim, the Corolla Cross boasts an impressive suite of infotainment technology. A 4.2" colour display takes pride of place in the dash, delivering a range of essential driving information with crisp TFT clarity, with a larger 7" option available higher up in the range. A second 7" screen offers touch control of entertainment, comfort, and safety features, with an 8" upgrade making for even easier use. Smartphone integration is standard on every model through both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, while optional extras include a wireless charging pad, rear-seat USB ports, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 as Standard

The generous technology levels continue into the advanced Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 suite that's supplied across the lineup. Designed to deliver a reliably safe drive while keeping the driver in total control, the key standard and available highlights include:

Forward-collision warnings with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
Radar cruise control to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, even at full speed.
Lane departure warnings that sound an alert if you start to drift outside painted lane markings, with optional steering assist to get you gently back on line.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, using radar to scan for vehicles out of your line of sight, and showing an illuminated alert in the side mirrors when a potential hazard is detected.
Higher trims also include an invaluable parking assist system with automatic braking, helping you to ease the Cross into the tightest of parking spaces.

Impressive Value with the Corolla Cross

But all of these features don't come at the cost of a high sticker price. The range starts at an MSRP of $24,890* in Canada for the L FWD trim, with the first all-wheel-drive option starting at an MSRP of $26,290*.
