Every fall, the same winter tire questions come up at our service counter. When is the right time to switch? Does an AWD Toyota really need them? Is there an insurance discount in Ontario? The answers are simpler than most people expect, and a few of them can save you money.

The team at Oakville Toyota pulled together the questions we hear most from Oakville and Halton Region drivers, with straightforward answers based on guidance from Transport Canada, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and Toyota Canada. Skim to the question you care about.

When Should I Put Winter Tires on My Toyota in Oakville?

Let the thermometer set the timing. TRAC recommends installing winter tires once temperatures reach 7°C or below, because that is where winter tires start to outperform all-season and summer tires. Transport Canada explains why: below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin losing elasticity and traction, while winter tires stay flexible.

Ontario does not set a fixed calendar date for installing them. When cold mornings at or below 7°C become regular, it is time to book your changeover.

Are Winter Tires Mandatory in Ontario?

No general seasonal winter tire law applies to ordinary passenger vehicles in Ontario. The Ministry of Transportation does recommend a full set of four winter tires, and it reports that winter tires can shorten braking distances by as much as 25%. That number is the best reason to treat them as standard equipment for an Ontario winter.

Do I Need Four Winter Tires or Just Two?

Four. Transport Canada says all four wheels should have winter tires to help keep the vehicle stable and under control on ice. Mixing tire types, constructions, tread patterns or sizes can upset handling, so plan for a matching set.

My Toyota Has AWD. Do I Still Need Winter Tires?

Yes. Toyota builds strong winter traction technology into its lineup. Every 2026 RAV4 sold in Canada comes standard with AWD, and the 2027 bZ AWD grades add X-MODE with Snow/Dirt, Deep Snow/Mud and Grip Control modes. These systems help manage how power reaches the wheels.

Transport Canada’s winter tire recommendation still applies to AWD vehicles. Your Toyota brakes and steers through its tires, and winter rubber is what gives AWD the grip it needs to do its job.

What Tire Pressure Should I Run in Winter?

Use the pressure listed on your Toyota’s tire information label, usually found on the driver’s door edge or post, or in your owner’s manual. Skip the number moulded into the tire sidewall, since that figure is the tire’s maximum.

Cold weather drags pressure down. TRAC says tire pressure falls about 1 psi for every 5°C drop in temperature, and it recommends checking at least once a month with a reliable gauge. Transport Canada adds a few tips:

  • Check pressure when tires are cold, after the vehicle has been parked at least three hours or driven no more than 2 km
  • A reading taken in a warm garage can come up short once you are outside below freezing
  • TPMS helps, but it does not replace a regular check with a gauge

Pressure also affects your fuel bill. Natural Resources Canada says driving with tires underinflated by 8 psi can increase fuel consumption by up to 4% and shorten tire life by more than 10,000 km.

How Much Tread Is Enough for Winter?

Transport Canada advises against using tires worn below 4 mm (5/32 inch) on snow-covered roads. That is a winter safety guideline. Ontario’s legal minimum under Regulation 625 is lower, at 1.5 mm, so a tire can be legal and still be too worn for a snowy commute. If your winter tires are getting close to 4 mm, ask our service team to measure them during your changeover.

How Long Do Winter Tires Last?

There is no set number of seasons. TRAC-hosted industry guidance explains that calendar age alone cannot predict a tire’s service life, because use and storage conditions matter. Regular inspections and the vehicle and tire manufacturers’ replacement recommendations are the best guide, and our technicians check tread depth and condition at every seasonal swap.

Can I Get an Insurance Discount for Winter Tires in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario’s Regulation 664 requires insurers to include a winter tire discount for private passenger vehicles on policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2016. Each insurer applies the discount differently, so the amount, the tires that qualify and any proof required vary by company. Call your insurer and ask how to qualify before you install your set.

Can I Use Studded Tires in Oakville?

For most Oakville drivers, no. Ontario’s Regulation 625 allows studded tires from September 1 to May 31 only for eligible permit holders, including residents of the listed Northern Ontario districts, certain Northern Ontario organizations and public bodies, the Crown, and out-of-province visitors whose vehicle stays in Ontario 30 days or less. Halton Region is not one of the listed Northern Ontario districts. A quality studless winter tire is the right fit here.

Can I Put Snow Chains on My Toyota?

Chain rules are set model by model. Your owner’s manual spells out if chains are permitted for your Toyota and tire size, and which axle they go on. AWD on its own does not make a vehicle chain-compatible, so check your manual before you buy any traction device.

When Should the Winter Tires Come Off?

TRAC says dedicated winter tires are meant for the winter months and should come off in the warmer seasons, because their compounds are too soft for summer use. Toyota Canada recommends switching back to summer or all-season tires once average temperatures climb above about 7°C.
