Stronger, Capable, Evolved. The All-New 2022 Toyota Tundra Is Coming To Oakville Toyota. Register Now For Updates!

The Toyota Tundra is a rugged full-size truck that marries huge performance with genuine off-road prowess. But in a fast-moving pickup market the second generation of the Tundra was in danger of being left behind, and so for 2022 the truck has been redesigned from the ground up. The impressive results seem certain to power the all-new Tundra ahead of its competition in the performance pickup truck field.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra will be available in late fall 2021, and here are just some of the highlights you can look forward to enjoying.

All-New Design

For the 2022 release, the Tundra has been almost entirely revised from the exterior through the cabin to the powertrain. A new V6 engine is available with hybrid tech for even higher performance, towing capability has been greatly upgraded, and the interior technology has been given a welcome makeover to place the Tundra firmly at the head of the features pack.

Twin-Turbo and Hybrid Performance

The powertrain is at the heart of any truck, and the updated 2022 Tundra delivers hugely attractive power and performance under the hood. At first glance, the switch from a V8 to a V6 engine might suggest a downgrade, but that's far from the case. The standard 3.5L twin-turbo mill puts out a highly respectable 389 horsepower and 479lb-ft of torque, substantially more than other entry-level trucks in its class. The generous output is passed through a 10-speed automatic transmission to either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, providing responsive handling on the trail and highway alike.

But that's not the end of the powertrain improvements. The 2022 Tundra engine is also available in a hybrid configuration, paired with an electric motor to deliver an impressive, combined output of 437 horsepower and 583lb-ft of near-instant torque, taking the truck to a new level of capability. What's more, the hybrid power is continuously optimized to provide the best combination of performance and efficiency, whatever the driving conditions you're taking the Tundra through.

Towing Capacity

The powertrain delivers on much more than raw output figures. The 2022 Tundra has a high-end towing capacity of up 5,454kg, with multiple cameras and sensors making maneuvering even the heaviest trailer a breeze. Match this with the payload capacity of up to 882kg and the new Tundra has more than enough hauling capability for the toughest of wilderness treks.

Tundra TRD Pro for Off-Road Excellence

Even in its standard configurations the Tundra is a powerful truck that's happy to leave the pavement behind, but for true off-road excellence the TRD Pro model offers a slew of trail-friendly features. A 2.8cm suspension lift is joined by upgraded 6.4cm Fox shocks with piggyback oil reservoirs, along with a front stabilizer bar and exclusive all-terrain Falken tires.

However, perhaps the most innovative off-road feature is the switchable automatic levelling system included with the TRD Pro. Turn the option on, and it will raise the suspension at low speeds for greater rock-crawling agility, before returning to normal height at speeds of 29km/h and above for smoother highway and cornering performance.

Interior and Infotainment

The extent of the Tundra's 2022 redesign is also clear from the premium interior. New creature comforts include a heated steering wheel, enhanced heated and cooled seats, sumptuous leather trims, and much more.

But it's with the interior technology that the Tundra takes a huge leap forward. An 8" touchscreen backed by a mixed digital / analog cluster is standard but moving up the trims boosts the touchscreen display size to a mammoth 14" and swaps in a high-definition 12.3" TFT digital gauge cluster that's configurable for each driving mode.

Wireless smartphone compatibility is standard through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with cloud-based navigation complete with over-the-air updates. And for a final tech flourish, the system boasts advanced voice recognition software which enables easy hands-free control of media functions, navigation, and more.

Advanced Active Safety Technology

Active safety systems are more usually found on family SUVs than high-performance pickups, but the 2022 Tundra boasts a suite of driver assist options that's a match for any current mainstream vehicle. Based around the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 system, the Tundra's highlights include:
- Forward pre-collision warnings with both pedestrian and cyclist detection.
- Emergency steering assist.
- Radar-assisted cruise control.
- Lane departure alerts with lane keep assist.
- Blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alerts.
- Trailer merge warnings with automatic trailer length sensing.
